7cb1d79195 The World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASPs) explored the oceans and kept the world safe from a variety of perils. The WASPs' main weapon was Stingray, a super-sub under the command of Troy Tempest. Troy's copilot was Phones, and they were often joined on missions by Marina, a princess of the undersea kingdom of Pacifica. Marina could breathe under water, but was unable to speak. In charge of the WASPs was gruff Commander Shore, whose daughter Atlanta was both a member of his staff and Marina's rival for Troy's affection. The missions of the World Aquanaut Security Patrol, particularly the crew of its most advanced combat submarine, the Stingray. Thunderbirds gets all the glory but there is a lot of fun to be had with Gerry Anderson's other puppet programme for kids and adults alike 'Stingray'.

The plots are OK and we warm to the characters as they go about their adventures. It's entertaining and funny and that's great.

What perhaps this show lacked that Thunderbirds had was the fact there wasn't as much depth to the characters and we never loved them in the same way we did about Lady Penelope and co.

Stingray may not be the classic show that Thunderbirds was, but it's still worth hunting out on DVD. Stingray is my favorite Supermarionation show by far! The themes are often strangely adult, we're shown Troy Tempest's dreams in some of the episodes, and there's a lot of unrequited desire between the puppets. Not surprisingly, the puppets drink pretty often.

This is not to dismiss the technical aspects of the show usually harped on. The look of the show is amazing, representing a larger, color version of the outlandish production design of the nifty Fireball XL-5. The Stingray itself is as mod-looking as the Batmobile. In fact, I'd say Stingray had to have been a major influence of the TV incarnation of Batman (1966.) (Kids could watch it for the action, adults could watch it for the humor and weird sexual tension.) And the music of Barry Gray is excellent as always.

I'm 35 and never saw Stingray as a child. But, despite the lack of a personal nostalgia factor, I must make room for it among my all-time favorite shows. It's pure escapism, but with a caricatured sense of human nature. For me, Thunderbirds and the other Anderson shows just became increasingly flat, with the puppets looking more and more like mannequins.

When it comes to marionettes, I get my kicks under water! This was quite deliberate. "Stingray" actually holds a unique place in television history, as it was the first British-made series to be shot entirely in colour. As a result, to thrill 1960's TV audiences, Gerry Anderson decided to "fool" them into thinking the show was made in the then prevalent black and white format, before spectacularly showing them otherwise utilising a pullback shot of Commander Shore in Marineville's Control Tower.

Later on in the the series' production, the opening black-and-white shots in the title sequence were replaced with colour ones, including a different explosion at sea, APF Production and Videcolor title cards, and subsequently a different shot of Commander Shore.

Incidentally the very first British series to be made in colour was The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (1956), but this was initially produced in black and white before switching to colour episodes due to its success on US television.
